Everyone knows who J.K. Rowling is today, but do you know the story of her success? I discovered a video of her giving the Harvard commencement address in 2005, a few months ago. I’ve never thought much about her or the speech but recently it’s been at times like a melody you’ve heard and cannot get it out of my mind.
I’ve thought a lot about success, failure and how I can learn from both. I’ve had both but I’ve never spent the time thinking about the lesson to be learned. You may say that I’m too spiritual or at worst that I am too cosmic. I’m not sure what either terms mean but before you watch, listen or consider what she said, it’s important to put her address into context.
Today, Ms. Rowling is richer than the Queen of England but it wasn’t always that way. As she wrote the first Harry Potter story she had a child and she was one step removed from the public dole. After she completed the first book no one wanted to publish it. One company told her to change her name hence the J.K. because they were concerned about people’s reaction to her as a female writer.
Listen to the commencement speech and you’ll understand what I am talking about, There’s truth in her speech. There’s honesty. She’s sharing the unvarnished reality of her story
